The “General Binding Rules” were introduced by the government in 2015 because poorly treated septic tank effluent is polluting rivers, streams, land and groundwater.
From January 2020 the law requires some homeowners that operate a septic tank to upgrade their systems to a “treatment plant” which cleans the wastewater properly before it enters the ground or watercourse.
